The Joy of Painting

I am proud to say that I have finished all the paintings for the baby's room.  I ended up with a lot more than what I originally intended but I think I'll manage to fit them all up there somehow.

One of the beautiful parts of this project what that is was ultimately made and put together by three mothers.  One grandmother helped bring and cut the fabric strips for some of the balloons and another grandmother helped pick out and cut all of the mats for the paintings.

Of course the choosing of the animals was a group effort. Many participated in this aspect including my 5-year-old niece.  Perhaps she didn't know what she was helping with but she did run off a list of animals when asked.  My nephews were not as interested as there was a movie playing at the time of the question.

Another rewarding aspect to completing these paintings is that I met one of my goals for this first half of the year.  One down, four more to go. Keeping my fingers crossed as I only have four weeks left until due date.

Husband's love for me has inflated my ambition with painting.  Although his opinion might be slightly subjective, he believes that I could market myself on Etsy with some nursery paintings.  Perhaps that might be a good path to look at in the near future.

As I haven't painted since I've been married, it was kind of exciting to sign my paintings with my married name.

The idea came from a combination of pictures on Pinterest and of course some personal creativity.

The music notes were to capture my husband's love for music. I'm considering getting a couple of hanging shelves on the walls and modge podging sheet music onto them to tie it all together. Any thoughts?

I love hedgehogs so I just HAD to paint two. :) And what Russian could go without some mushrooms in the painting? Of course I know that those mushrooms are poisonous, so why would the Hedgehog be taking some home with him? But really... red mushrooms with white polka-dots? I just can't resist!

The Beauty of Joy

Last year I focused on finding the beauty in all that was around me.  And so the focus slightly shifts as this year is all about finding JOY...

New Goals

Since I'm due with my first baby in April, I'm a little apprehensive to make goals for this year. I'm not sure what I will have time for or what I will want to prioritize in addition to mommy/baby time.  As far as goals for after, I'm not sure yet what kinds of things I want as a mother with an infant. So I'm thinking I'll make a couple of goals for before the baby and then reconvene with goals after the baby.

Goals:
1. Paint one painting
2. Finish reading The Screwtape Letters
3. Pray in the morning and the evening
4. Have nursery decorated and set-up BEFORE the baby arrives
5. Have a natural birth

Overall, I've been getting stressed over... everything. So, my theme for this year is to ENJOY THE RIDE. Enjoy the ride and thus enjoy life and enjoy everyday for what it is.

What are some of your goals this year?

The Beauty of Initiating Change

So now that half of the year has gone by, I have finally decided to make the changes I set out to make at the beginning of the year.

Changes Made:
  • Joined Weight Watchers
  • Healthy foods bought at Trader Joe's included: broccoli, kale, eggs, non-fat yogurt, & lentils
  • Joined the local community center
  • Attended a 50 minute workout class (and was impressed with the old lady in front of me who was kicking my butt!)
1920's Ad

And at the end of the day was able to enjoy a glass of red wine while sitting on the porch eating dinner with my husband

Dinner for Six

Variation of Raspberry Rickey
Muddled Raspberries
Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
Sliced Nectarines
Vodka
St. Germaine
Club Soda
-A little odd the night of but amazing the next day when the fruit tastes fused together, perhaps a good recipe to make ahead when short on time.

Onion, Thyme, & Goat Cheese Tart
Butter
Onions
Garlic
Thyme
Puff Pastry
Goat Cheese
Salt
Pepper

The tarts were a big hit and were easy to make.

Coffee-Braised Pot Roast w/ Caramelized Onions
Beef
Onions
Salt
Pepper
Thyme
Garlic
Coffee
Balsamic Vinegar

I went a little onion crazy without realizing it until I started cooking.  There were also string beans paired with this meal.  Another item would have been a welcomed addition to the menu.  Dessert was ice cream with Milano cookies and hot fudge.

L'Oiseau

Another dinner party. Another napkin fold.  This is my 2nd napkin fold that I have learned this year.  Two down, three more to go, that much closer to achieving one of my New Year's goals.  This particular napkin fold was named by some as the Bishop's Hat but I decided that was no name for a folded piece of art on the table so I have renamed it L'Oiseau meaning bird in French.  The top point of the napkin array which is folded over made me think of bird's beak.  It is supposed to be standing straight up, which does then make it look more like a bishop's hat.
My color theme was red and yellow.  This should not come as a huge surprise because when you combine the two you get... orange!
The back of the napkin fold also looks nice.  It makes me want to put something in the middle.  And of course if we used the back of the fold as the front, we would have to come up with a new name.  The folds have a palm tree-esque feeling.
